What Your Android Device Needs First

Enable Unknown Sources

Android 8 and newer

Settings > Apps > [your browser or file manager] > Install unknown apps — toggle on for that app only. Revoke after installation.

Android 7 and below

Settings > Security > Unknown Sources (global toggle). Performance below Android 8 is unreliable for demanding open-world builds.

Download APK and OBB From a Trustworthy Source

Most unreliable "GTA 5 APK" sites deliver empty files, malware, or endless survey loops. A real package is ~4 GB total. Warning signs: countdown timers, required app installs first, no version notes, no requirements page.

Chrome may warn "This type of file can harm your device"—tap Download anyway for generic APK notices, then scan with VirusTotal.

Install the APK (Do Not Open Yet)

Tap the APK in Downloads, confirm permissions (storage yes; contacts/SMS no). Install completes in under a minute on capable hardware. Do not tap Open until OBB is placed.

Set Up OBB Data

  1. Extract the OBB ZIP with ZArchiver or Solid Explorer if needed.
  2. Locate the package folder (e.g. com.rockstar.gtav).
  3. Move it to Internal Storage/Android/obb/.
  4. Verify path: Android/obb/com.rockstar.gtav/main.xxxx.com.rockstar.gtav.obb

Folder name must match exactly—character for character.

Fix Common Installation Errors

"App not installed"

Black screen on launch

Almost always wrong OBB path or folder name. Re-verify before blaming the APK.

"Downloading additional data" loop

Do not tap in-game download—exit and fix OBB placement instead.
